The collection was probably amassed by James Howard McGregor of the Anthropology Dept. as the first part of a lecture on the evolution of man. The first part was entitled "Apes" and the second, "Studies of Man." Many photographs come from the Museum's Dept. of Public Education. Born in Minden, Germany, on July 8, 1858, the anthropologist Franz Boas was the son of the merchant Meier Boas and his wife, Sophie Meyer.
